Alexis Cohen, former American Idol contestant

I was saddened today by this news story on Mail.com (click on the image to see a larger version):

News story about the death of Alexis Cohen

Saddened that the defining fact about this woman's life (at least according to a news organisation) is that she auditioned for American Idol twice.

Well, if she hadn't done that, no one would really notice she'd passed on aside from any family and friends.

Yes, Blue, you're right - I'm just surprised that the fact Alexis Cohen was an unsuccessful contestant on Idol is enough to make her death newsworthy.

Ah, that's American culture for you...

I understand she is notable in the tirade she offered when she didn't make the show. That's the story I read anyway.

Alexis tried out but never became a "contestant". Her tirade was obviously, imho, preplanned but quite funny ("quite" in the American sense). I read about the death of a British reality TV star here on The Engine Room. Our cultures aren't that different.

I'm sure you're right. But at what point does 'trying out' become 'contesting'?

I draw the line at "Here's your Golden Ticket! You're going to Hollywoo-ood!" Before that you've auditioned. Maybe I'm splitting hairs.
